David Hicks: a Reading and Q&A In-Person

After he leads our monthly writing workshop, author David Hicks will join Centennial Park Library for a Q&A  and a reading of his new novel, The Gospel According to Danny.  David's previous books are the novel-in-stories White Plains, a 2018 finalist for the Colorado Book Award and one of Westword Magazine's “Ten Great Books by Colorado Authors"; and an autobiographical children’s book, THE MAGIC TICKET, published in July 2024. The Gospel According to Danny, published by Vine Leaves Press on May 13, 2025, has been called "deeply evocative" and "dark, funny, and modern." Hicks, who has been called "a motormouth Philip Roth" by author Matt Bell, has, in The Gospel According to Danny, written "a dynamic portrait of relatable characters," according to Philip Brady, while "portraying, with unflinching vigor, the fall of the American Empire." David will discuss the challenges he faced in writing a politically volatile novel while depicting with compassion the trials and tragedies experienced by his flawed, working-class hero.
