El Vaquero: America’s First Cowboy In-Person

It time to learn to lasso in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month! Angel Vigil, in an historically accurate costume, shares the adventures of the vaqueros. By presenting tools of the working vaquero, demonstrating trick roping, and teaching participants to lasso, Angel brings history to life. 

This show is geared for families with elementary and middle school aged children, but any and all are welcome to attend.

Tracing cowboy culture’s roots from the open plains of Spain to the establishment of ranching culture in the New World, the show describes the role of the Spanish/Mexican vaquero in the development of cowboy and ranching practices in the American West. The show places the historical and fictional lore of the origins of the American cowboy in the context of the vaquero, America’s first cowboy.
